CHARLIE BLOWER
My second time riding with Wilson of Raw Epics at Badak Bike Park. And like the first, I managed to crash! But more of that later.
Wilson is an exceptional bike trainer and the consummate guide. I’ve done several MTB training sessions with him over the years and each builds on and reminds you of what you’ve invariably forgotten in between times. His foundations are rock solid. And as I often say, we constantly upgrade our hardware like bikes and kit, it’s the rider’s own software that often falls short. (In this case, my brain!)
His trips are well planned while his guidance about travel timing and packing lists is excellent. Most likely because he has made many similar trips in the past.
There were 6 MTB riders travelling from Singapore to Batam, with one joining us in Batam. We all arrived at Harbourfront with bikes packed up at the correct time, then proceeded to board with plenty of time to spare. Arrival in Batam was equally smooth and we had the bikes loaded on the transport in no time.
At the park, with a quick safety briefing out of the way, we set off on the shuttles for the first laps. Badak is a fun place if you like riding bike parks. The trails are well maintained by Hercules and his team; and quite flowy with some clearly more challenging than others with gap jumps, etc. I’m quite a conservative rider and avoid those big jumps like the plague. Still there is enough to entertain here. And after a few runs, we were nearing noontime and getting hungry which is when my crash happened.
Going down what looked like a simple descent, I went off camber, tried to correct then got all sideways and went otb. I banged my head and ended up unconscious for a while. Wilson’s quick care and attention got me into the recovery position. Then after carefully helping me come to, I was back on my feet and into the vehicle safely and swiftly for the trip back to camp.
I want to thank Wilson and my fellow riders for looking after me. That’s Dato Roslan, Frank, Fred, Elliot and young Arjo, who provided shade with his shirt.
And thanks too, go to Hercules and his team at Badak. Their logistics and support is top drawer.
If you’re looking for a bike trainer to teach you good MTB skills, look no further than Wilson. And if you’re looking for an experienced trip planner to take you MTB-ing, Wilson’s your man.
Thanks Wilson for all the care and attention you provided on the day. I may have forgotten most of the detail of your lessons but I thank you for the training and for all your good guidance over the years.
